I have a MSI GE62 7RE with this screen:

Would I be able to use a N156HHE-GA1 display?

As far as I know this laptop model didnt come with a 120 hz option, so maybe it needs to be whitelisted in the BIOS?

Yes, it's possible. I guess you want it for the 120hz rate?

There are cases where replacing to the 120hz display resulted in not being able to control brightness

Yes,I want it for the 120hz. In some forums I have been told I would need it whitelisted in bios, in others that it should be ok.

It depends. I have no information about this specific model. Did you find anything specific about your laptop?

Didnt find anything specific, sadly.

I might gift myself a new laptop for xmas. Have you tried any MSI laptop with a 8750H?

How bad are the temperatures? Is it possible to fully stop temperature throttle with undervolt + repaste?
