Lenovo Y520

The new Lenovo Y520 is Lenovos’ basic midrange gaming laptop. It comes with the usual hardware of GTX 1050 Ti (4GB), basic 1080p IPS display (meaning, for example, mediocre colors) and not a lot connection ports.

The I5-7300HQ + GTX 1050 Ti deliver quite a good performance, certainly good enough for 1080p resolution, allowing most games to run on very high settings fluently. As of the I5 CPU – I’d pick it over the I7 versions, since it requires less energy, and produces less heat, which also means less noise.

While there are other laptops with GTX 1050 Ti, some with better features, $720 is relatively a good price for such a machine, but remember it has a 5400RPM HDD (slow) and only 1x8GB DDR4 stick, which means that it won’t utilize dual-channel memory abilities, as shipped. You can add those yourself, so if you know how to pick your stuff, for around $800 you’ll get this machine with SSD + HDD and 12-16GB RAM.

That’s not a lot cheaper than other options, but it saves at least $100 compared to the usual prices.

One thing to notice, this Y520 version comes with a 45Wh battery, which is relatively small.
